The Newtown and Machynlleth Railway was a British railway company in Montgomeryshire in Wales.

History

The Newton and Machynlleth Railway was chartered on July 27, 1857. The concession included track usage rights with the Great Western Railway, the London and North Western Railway, the Llanidloes and Newtown Railway, the Oswestry and Newtown Railway and the Shrewsbury and Welshpool Railway. With a change in the concession on July 3, 1860, the rights to use reduced to the Oswestry and Newtown Railway. It was expected construction costs in the amount of 150,000 pounds sterling.

The 36.6 km railway line between Moat Lane Junction ( at Newtown ) on the railway line of Llanidloes and Newtown Railway and Machynlleth was opened on January 3, 1863. The construction of the line was made by the company of David Davies.

The operation was carried out initially by the Great Western Railway for 40 % of revenue. In addition, a dividend of 5 pounds per one percent stake in the company was guaranteed. With effect from 1 May 1863, the Newton and Machynlleth Railway was leased to the Oswestry and Newtown Railway for 100 years. The lease payment guaranteed a dividend of 4.50 pounds per one percent of the company shares.

The Newtown and Machynlleth Railway merged on July 25, 1864, three other companies to the Cambrian Railways.
