Nibelungen Railway

Die Nibelungen web is a 23.9 km long, non-electrified railway line from Worms to Bensheim. Her name was the route because it connects multiple locations together, which play an important role in the Nibelungen saga.

History

After 1846, the Main-Neckar Railway was opened in north-south direction along the mountain road, the plan was to open up the Hessian Odenwald part of the front with the railroad. One goal was to combine the raw materials originating from this area with the harbor in Worms. In the 1860s, began preliminary planning phase, with both the town of Bensheim and the more southerly location Heppenheim tried to ensure that will be the starting point of the Odenwald route. However, a problem preparing the case to crossing slopes along the mountain road.

Despite unfinished plans of the Odenwald route the Nibelungen railway was opened on 27 October 1869. We had chosen the route of Worms Bensheim, in which the distance between Worms and Hofheim went together with the Riedbahn. A later phase of construction Riedbahn crosses the Nibelungen train Buerstadt by a tower station.

Meanwhile, delayed the plans for the Odenwald route until 1890 addition. However, the final route of the Weschnitztalbahn opened in 1895 has the starting point in Weinheim, from where the line follows the valley of the Weschnitz.

It was not until 1903, the link Heppenheim - Lorsch was built. Because of the failure of the Odenwald connection with the Nibelungen train also hoped the traffic below expectations remained. A few decades later, therefore, the route Heppenheim - Lorsch was decommissioned and dismantled.

From 12th to 18th September 1990, the dragon action took place also on the route.

Operation

The remaining Nibelungen train is still a poorly underutilized branch line (DB ) is operated by diesel railcars in the 628 series as a line RB 63 from the Deutsche Bahn AG. Mondays to Fridays provides hourly regional trains with encounter mostly to the symmetry in time Buerstadt; especially on Sundays, the offer is limited to one every two hours. The route is entirely within the transport association Rhein- Neckar ( VRN). For journeys in the direction of Darmstadt and Frankfurt are on the track also the tariffs of the Rhine -Main Transport Association ( RMV).

That would allow planned for 2006, connecting the Nibelungen train to the electronic interlocking in Weinheim, the condensed run-in in the train stations, so that today's travel time would be reduced from approximately 30 minutes between Worms and Bensheim, was not performed. The feasibility of an additional station Bensheim South is under review. In the course of the tender of the Nibelungs train as part of the link set ' Rheinhessen / wine route' was aimed at a whole range modernization; a renewal of the safety technology is currently not provided. However, the platforms should be increased to 55 cm to allow after the tender barrier-free access to the trains.

Although the route ends today on a sack track in the Worms Hauptbahnhof, by another manager in the track ahead, however, a through connection to Monsheim or Ludwigshafen is conceivable. In order to improve the extremely poor connections between Worms and Darmstadt, a through connection is required to Hessian page to Darmstadt Hbf often. However, this will only be possible after a relief of the Main- Neckar line through the new route Frankfurt- Mannheim.

An incident occurred on the night of November 28 to 29 November 2009. Two 14 and 16 year old youths broke into a building on Bürstädter station and taught there at considerable material damage. Among other things, they damaged several technical cabinets, which meant that the operation of trains on the track turned out the next two days and a replacement bus service had to be done.
