Niccolò Tommaseo

Niccolò Tommaseo (* 1802 in Šibenik, † May 1, 1874 in Florence ) was an Italian writer.

Life

Tommaseo studied in Padua the rights, but followed his passion for literature. He was working as a journalist since 1827 in Florence and went in 1833 to France.

In 1834 he published his treatise Dell ' educazione (1834 ), which enjoyed three editions within two years, the political writing L' Italia (1835 ) and the novel Il duca d' Atene (1836 ).

From 1838 on he lived in Venice, where a year had previously published his commentary on Dante. There he published his Nuovi Critti (1839-1840, 4 volumes), the Studj critici (1843, 2 volumes) as well as its famous collection of Canti popolari toscani, corsici, illirici, greci (1843, 2 volumes).

Also, an adaptation of the related to the history of France in the 16th century ambassadors 'reports (1838, 2 volumes ), and he edited the Lettere di Pasquale de' Paoli (1846 ) appeared. His strict Catholic convictions did not prevent him to confess in 1848 to the Liberal and National Party.

Because of his outspoken occurrence with Daniele Manin he was arrested, but forcibly freed from the people and placed as minister of education with Manin at the head of the provisional government of Venice. He left the city before the arrival of the Austrians and traveled to Corfu, where a disease had his blindness resulted. In 1852 he published in Milan his psychological novel Fede e bellezza, which was reprinted several times. 1854-1859 he lived in Turin, then went to Florence.

Tommaseo was one of the most respected writers of his time. He had a versatile and lively moving spirit and was a critic of great influence. Since 1851 he was a member of the Accademia della Crusca in Florence.
