Nicholas Edwards, Baron Crickhowell
Roger Nicholas Edwards, Baron Crickhowell of Pont Esgob ( February * 25, 1934 ) in the Black Mountains and County of Powys PC is a British politician of the Conservative Party, among others, 1979-1987 Minister of Wales in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher had.
Life
After attending Westminster School and at Trinity College, University of Cambridge Edwards worked as a manager at the insurer's William Brandt 's and then director of Grindlays Bank.
Edwards was he as a candidate of the Conservative Party first elected at the general election of June 18, 1970 Member of the House of Commons and took there first the constituency of Pembrokeshire, and then after the general election of February 28, 1974 to June 11, 1979 the constituency Pembroke. During this time he was speaker of the opposition faction for Wales and therefore in the shadow cabinet of his party responsible " Shadow Minister for Wales ."
After the electoral victory of the Conservative Party after the general election in 1979 by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on 5 May 1979 as Minister for Wales ( Secretary of State for Wales) appointed to the cabinet and held this post until his retirement from the House of Commons on June 13, 1979. with more than eight years in office, Edwards was thus the Wales Minister with the longest tenure since the founding of this ministerial office in 1951.
After his retirement from the House of Commons and the Government, he was raised as a life peer with the title Baron Crickhowell of Pont Esgob in the Black Mountains and County of Powys to the peerage and became a member of the House of Lords as a member.
At the same time he first was in 1988 chairman of the advisory board of the newly founded National River Authority ( National Rivers Authority) and was followed between 1989 and 1996 head of that authority. At times, he was president and is now an Honorary Fellow of Cardiff University and got beyond a Doctor of Laws honoris causa from the University of Glamorgan awarded.
