He was the eldest son of John II of Werle [- Güstrow ] and Mechthild.

After the death of his father Nicholas II in 1337, he reigned alone at first, and from 1339 to 1347 together with his brother Bernard. After 1347 his brother took over the rule of Werle - goods and he kept the part Werle - Güstrow. On August 10, 1360 he is last mentioned in a document and probably died a short time later.
