Nick Waplington

Nick Waplington (* 1965 in Aden ) is an English photographer.

Biography

Waplington was born the son of a nuclear scientist. He spent the youth with his family to unschiedlichen places until he moved to Nottingham to his grandfather, an old industrial city in the East Midlands in England in 1985. Already as a student he photographed his immediate surroundings, his friends and neighbors, and the urban landscape of Nottingham.

His first photo book " Living Room", he published in 1991 by Aperture. For this, he spent many weekends since 1986 in two families from the working class in Nottingham. He took part in their lives and documented the gritty daily life between chaos and happiness, in a dead-end society. "Living Room" learned in the picture books Weddings, Parties, Anything a sequel.

From 1993 to 2000, a photo reportage about the small town of " Truth or Consequences" in New Mexico, which was called in 1950 for a radio and television show created by Ralph Edwards. The photographs Waplingtons of the commonplaces of the place with the unusual name and its surrounding landscape, are the same quote and pays homage to the famous photographer of everyday American life Walker Evans, Edward Weston, Robert Frank and William Eggleston " ... In 1990 he received the European Kodak Award and the 1993 ICP Young Photographer Award. In 2001 he took part in the 49th Venice Biennale. He lives and works in London.
