Nicolaas Beets

Nicolaas Beets (* September 13 1814 in Haarlem, † March 13, 1903 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch theologian and writer.

Beets was the son of a pharmacist. After completing school in his hometown, he began at the University of Leiden to study theology and was able to successfully complete this study in 1839 with his doctorate. After 15 years of Beets 1854 got a permanent position as a preacher at the Utrecht Dom. Already in those years began Beets composing poems and short stories, which was mostly published under his pseudonym Hildebrand. 1874 appointed him to the University of Utrecht as a full professor of theology. 1877/78 he served as rector of the university.

The contemporary literary critics praised Beets and compared his early work with the George Gordon Byron. But the movement of the Sturm und Drang found in Beets a worthy representative. In his short stories Beets addressed the landscapes of his native land with its inhabitants as well exactly how exactly he wrote his nonfiction. This includes theological works, such as his work on Paul of Tarsus, works of literary criticism, as Verscheidenheden meest op gebied letter knowledgeable and always literary works.
