Nicolas Flagello

Nicolas Flagello ( born March 15, 1928 in New York City; † March 16, 1994 in New Rochelle was an American composer.

Life

Nicolas Flagello was born in New York City into a family of great musical tradition. His brother Ezio Flagello was a bass, who sang with great success at the Metropolitan Opera. One of Flagello 's first music teacher was the composer Vittorio Giannini. He then studied at the Manhattan School of Music. In 1955 he went to the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, where he studied with Ildebrando Pizzetti. First recordings of his works date from the early 1960s. His work includes many compositions in almost all genres. The highlight of his career he reached with his oratorio, The Passion of Martin Luther King ( 1968), which was premiered in 1974. Nicolas Flagello was one of the last composer with a distinctive mode of expression that were based entirely on the principles and techniques of European late romanticism. In the mid-1980s, his career was cut short by a degenerative disease. He died in New Rochelle, NY on March 16, 1994.
