Niels Juel

Niels Juel ( born May 8, 1629 in Christiania (Oslo ), † April 8, 1697 in Copenhagen) was a Danish admiral.

Juel first entered Dutch service and returned only in 1656 returned to Denmark, where he took over in Copenhagen in 1657, the Office of the spar Admirals. He was appointed chief of a squadron in the war against Denmark, Sweden in 1659 and distinguished himself under the command Obdams and de Ruyter, the Dutch had sent a fleet to help, at the siege of Copenhagen.

The peace treaty of 1660 was followed in 1675 a new war with Sweden in which Juel played a major role. 1676 he conquered with a fleet of 18 ships, the island of Gotland. Sweden then equipped a powerful fleet with 44 ships of the line. In May 1676 Juel met the enemy, after he had received seven more ships, so that he could now act with 25. Finally between Bornholm and Rügen, he forced the Swedes to retreat. The king appointed him governor of Gotland and sent him a further gain of 9 ships. On 1 June, the Swedish fleet was again, this time at Öland, beaten.

The following year, Juel defeated near Warnemünde the Swedish Admiral Sjöblad and then delivered on July 1, 1677, the memorable naval battle in the Køgebucht where the 36 ships strong Swedish fleet was defeated by the 25 of Danish.

Niels Juel died on 8 April 1697 in Copenhagen.
