Nightshirt

The nightgown is a far -cut, usually knee-length shirt with sleeves, often made of canvas or cotton, but also from precious materials such as silk, which is worn for sleeping. Nightgowns were formerly worn by both women and men alike, currently they are rarely common in men, however, were never quite out of fashion. The name Night Shirt is also common for men nightshirts. Such see a pajama top very similar, but are about knee length cut.

Until the 16th century it was customary to sleep naked. Women were sometimes worn on the day of the shirt. For the sick and have recently given birth, there was wide shirts of white linen. The first nightgown is mentioned in 1500 in Italy. Then it was taken over by the entire European upper class and first mentioned in Germany and heart protectors. Around 1880, the continuous buttoning was introduced for women front and a drawstring at the waist. The men wore it until about 1890, then the pajama became popular. Women wore up to the First World War, basically a nightgown, no pajamas. 1956 was the Baby Doll fashion.
