Niko Pirosmani

Niko Pirosmani, birth name Nikoloz Pirosmanashvili (Georgian ნიკო ფიროსმანი; native ნიკოლოზ ასლანის ძე ფიროსმანაშვილი / Nikoloz Aslanis dse Pirosmanashvili, * 1862 in Mirsaani, Georgia, † April 9, 1918 in Tbilisi ) was a Georgian painter. The self-taught artist painted scenes from the Georgian folk life. Only after his death was his naive art international recognition.

Life

His exact birth date is unknown. He was the youngest of three children in a peasant family kakhetian. The family owned a small vineyard, some cows and oxen. After the death of his father in 1870 and soon after, his mother brought him his sister to Tbilisi. In 1872, he appeared as a domestic help in the services of wealthy families, learned Georgian and Russian to read and write, taught himself to paint with.

In 1890, he worked as a conductor at the Georgian Railway, opened three years later with a partner, a milk shop in Tbilisi.

Around 1901 he left the company, lived homeless in the station district of Tbilisi. His livelihood, he played with the painting of pubs signs and odd jobs. He exchanged his paintings in the dives against eating, drinking and a warm place to spend the night.
