Nikolay Beketov

Nikolai Nikolayevich Beketov (Russian Николай Николаевич Бекетов, scientific transliteration Nikolay Nikolayevich Beketov; * 1 Januarjul / January 13 1827greg in Alfjorjewka, .. .. † 30 Novemberjul / December 13 1911greg in Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian chemist.

Life

He graduated in 1849 at the State University of Kazan. After his return to Saint Petersburg, he worked in the medical laboratory for four years with Nikolai Zinin. In 1855 he became a research assistant at the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Kharkiv. From 1859 to 1886 he taught as a professor at this university. In 1886 he moved back to St. Petersburg, where he worked in the chemical laboratory of the University and held at the University for Women lectures. In 1890 he lectured on the subject "Fundamentals of thermochemistry " at the Lomonosov University in Moscow.

Between 1859 and 1865 proved Beketov that aluminum is able to extract other metals at high temperatures from their oxides. In later years, these experiments served as a starting point for the development of aluminothermy.

Honors

The lunar crater Beketov was named after him.
