Nils Strindberg

Nils Strindberg ( born September 4, 1872 in Stockholm, † October 1897 on Kvitøya, Svalbard ) was a Swedish scientist and photographer. In 1897 he was participant of failed balloon journey to the North Pole by Salomon Andrée August.

Strindberg studied until 1893 at the University of Uppsala in 1895 and was awarded the post of a clerk at the Stockholm University, now the University of Stockholm. In the same year he was selected by Andrée as a third man for the polar expedition. 1896 Strindberg traveled to Paris and settled in the handling of gas balloons instructed. Then he went to Svalbard. Due to unfavorable wind conditions, the Polfahrt did not take place but in this year. In 1896, he became engaged to Anna Charlier. Eight months later, in July 1897, Strindberg started from the Danish island with Andrée and Knut Fraenkel with the balloon Örnen, in which he, like the other two members of the expedition died. The bodies were only 33 years later found on Kvitøya, returned to Sweden and cremated. The ashes were buried in a common grave in the Norra begravningsplatsen in Stockholm.

Strindberg's father was a cousin of the writer August Strindberg.
