Nineveh plains

The level Nineveh ( Syriac -Aramaic ܫ ܠ ܒ ܐ ܕ ܢ ܝ ܢ ܘ ܐ, Arabic سهل نينوى ) is a region in the Iraqi province of Ninawa. In the north and in the west it borders the city of Mosul. The level generally consists of three districts: Tel Kaif, Al - Hamdaniya and Al - Shikhan. The area includes the ancient Assyrian ruins of the cities of Nineveh, Nimrud and Dur Šarrukin.

Population

Most of the inhabitants are Syro- Aramaic-speaking Christians ( Syriacs ) (also Assyrians / Syrians / Chaldeans called ) and include the following Syrian churches:

  • Syriac Catholic Church
  • Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch
  • Assyrian Church of the East

The region of Nineveh level is considered to be home to the Syrian Christians. In addition to the Syrian Christians live as a minority Kurds (Muslims, Yazidis and Shabak ) in the plane.

For autonomy

As cities and villages of the Nineveh - level form a majority of the Syrian Christians and the area in ancient times was a part of the Assyrian Empire, an attempt to create an autonomous region for the Syriacs living there in the Nineveh plain. Some members of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region (which no legal responsibility for the area has ) supported the proposal of an autonomous Syrian Christian region in the plane. For several years, are plans to promote this region, including the establishment of a university is planned.
