Nizhneyansk

Nischnejansk (Russian Нижнеянск, scientific transliteration Nižnejansk; Yakut Нижнеянскай / Nižnejansk ), is an urban-type settlement with 391 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Russian Far East. It is located in the tundra of the East Siberian lowland in the delta of Jana, on the left bank of the main arm about 30 km above the mouth.

Nischnejansk part of the Ulus Ust- Jansk. It is one of three urban settlements in the Ulus and one of the ten municipalities. It is surrounded by the municipality of Ust- Jansk that covers the entire Delta.

With port facilities and a repair yard the place forms a transport hub in the extremely sparsely populated region of the Russian Arctic coast. Port and settlement emerged in the years of the Second World War. 1958, the place as ' settlement ( рабочий посёлок / rabočij Posëlok ) was classified. Until the 1960s, the name spelling Nishne - Jansk was common.

The population has massively declined in the last two decades: from about 2,500 in 1989, more than 700 in the census of 2002 to only 357 in 2010.
