Noel Purcell (water polo)

Mary Joseph Noel Purcell ( born December 25, 1899 in Dublin, † January 31, 1962 in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland) was an Irish water polo and rugby players.

For the British Olympic water polo team, which was to travel to Antwerp in 1920, seven Englishmen were obliged to go for the UK at the start. Shortly before their departure for a friendly game against a selection of players from other parts of the United Kingdom took place, which lost the British Olympic team 6-0. Then was short changed the formation and players from Ireland, Scotland and Wales were considered. Purcell, a native of Ireland, slid the more random nor in the selection, participated in the Olympics. After victories against Spain and America, the team could be Olympic champion by a 3-2 win over Belgium and win the gold medal. Purcell did not raise any goals during the tournament.

At the Olympic Games four years later in Paris Purcell participated with an independent team from Ireland, but was eliminated in the first round by a 2:4 against Czechoslovakia. After his water polo career, he was rugby player when he came to some international matches after the First World War.
