Nogaysky District, Republic of Dagestan
The Nogaiski rayon (Russian Ногайский район ) is located in the extreme northwest of the Russian republic of Dagestan.
Geography
The Rajon bordered to the north by the Republic of Kalmykia, on the west by the Stavropol region in the south of Chechnya and to the east by the Tarumowski rayon of the Republic of Dagestan. Rajon from the territory of the city of Yuzhno- Nogaiski Suchokumsk is enclosed, but forms a separate urban district and not part of Rajon. The area of the Rajons is about 9000 square kilometers.
Population
The main population of the rayon Nogaiski represent the Nogai, a Turkic people, after Rajon its name. They are mainly Sunni Muslims. There is a strong minority of Darginern also an autochthonous people of the Republic of Dagestan. Furthermore, few Chechens, Russians, Kumyks, Avars, sheets, Lezgins and Azerbaijanis living in Rajon.
