Norman Barrett

Norman Rupert Barrett ( born May 16, 1903 in Adelaide, † January 8, 1979 in London) was a British surgeon. According to him, among other things, Barrett's ulcer and Barrett 's esophagus were named.

Life

Barrett was born in Australia but came the age of ten in the UK, where he studied and worked all his life. He received his education at Eton College and at Trinity College, University of Cambridge. In 1928 he graduated from the St Thomas ' Hospital ( London).

On March 7, 1947, he operated the first successful spontaneous oesophageal rupture ( Boerhaave's syndrome). Barrett describes the reflux -related conversion of the squamous epithelium of the esophagus distal to a cylindrical epithelium, which is referred to as Barrett 's esophagus and in up to 14 % results in an adenocarcinoma.

In 1962, he became president of the thoracic surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland. From 1946 to 1971 he was editor of the journal Thorax.
