The Tower of Alloa Glassworks is located on the grounds of Alloa Glass Works in the Scottish town of Alloa in Clackmannanshire unitary authority. It is the only remaining glassworks tower in Scotland. In 1972, the building was added to the Scottish lists of monuments in the highest category A. Furthermore, the conical tower is protected as a Scheduled Monument.

History

In 1750 the Alloa Glass Works of Lady Frances Erskine were founded. The construction of the first glassworks tower led specifically for this purpose by dedicated specialists from Bohemia, which took over the training of local workers. The tower had a diameter of 15 m and a height of 27 m. As part of the expansion of the plant three more towers were built in 1825-1827, which is now one of the well preserved. Last of the neighboring Southern Cone in 1968 demolished. The northern cone described here was embedded at this time in a shell building, which was removed during the disassembly of the South Tower. Today is the only glassworks tower in Scotland and one of only four received throughout the United Kingdom.

Description

The masonry of about 24 m high, open-topped, conical tower is made of brick. It was built above a round furnace for glass production. His task was to generate a sufficiently large suction, thus enabling high temperatures for production. The tower rests on an octagonal base.
