Alloa

Alloa [ æloʊə ] (Gaelic: Allmhagh Mòr ) is a Scottish town in the unitary authority Clackmannanshire. It is situated in the Central Lowlands on the north bank of the Firth of Forth, about ten kilometers east of Stirling and 13 km north of Falkirk. In 2001, Alloa recorded 18,989 inhabitants. It is the administrative headquarters of Clackmannanshire.

History

Alloa developed at the site of a ford with the ferry dock. When the weir was completed in 1497 Alloa Tower was installed. After eight years of restoration it was opened in time for the 500th anniversary of the completion in 1997 of the audience.

End of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century Alloa began climbing into an important port city. This continued positive momentum for the local industry. At this time, sawmills, rope factories, ship builders and sailmakers were in Alloa textile manufacturer located. In addition, Alloa had on regional awareness and importance for its breweries, coal mining and glass processing. However, after the end of the First World War the harbor became less important. Between 1795 and 1880 the city was the site of a whiskey distillery Alloa on regionally significant distillery. The meantime torn whiskey distillery Carsebridge in Alloa was operated 1799-1983. It belonged temporarily to the world's largest producers of grain whiskey.

Although the name of the nearby town of Clackmannanshire Clackmannan derived, today is the administrative center of the county Alloa. Nearly half of the residents of Clackmannanshire live there.

Traffic

The A91 runs directly north of Alloa and includes the city on to the road network. In 1850, Alloa was connected to the railway network. The station was operated by various lines, the Stirling and Dunfermline Railway, the Kincardine Line, both operated by the North British Railway, and the Alloa Railway operated by Caledonian Railway. In October 1968, the station was abandoned, however. After 40 years, the station was put back into operation in 2008 and regularly served by the Croy Line First ScotRail.

Sports

The Alloa Athletic FC are in Alloa a professional football club, formerly played in the top Scottish league. The home games are played at Recreation Park. In addition, in Alloa are a sports center and a golf course to be found.
