Nostra Signora del Sacro Cuore

The church of Nostra Signora del Sacro Cuore ( San Giacomo degli Spagnoli also called ) is a Catholic church, which is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is located at the Piazza Navona in Rome. It is the title of diakonia Cardinal Koch.

History

The original church was built in the 12th century on the ruins of the ancient stadium of Domitian. The present church was the Holy Year in 1450 by a commission led by the Infante Henry of Castile, the son of King Ferdinand III. built of Castile. The façade, which was originally located on the opposite side, was designed by Bernardo Rossellino.

Since 1506, the church was the Spanish national church in Rome, and was used mainly by the Spanish court and Spanish pilgrims. Only after the completion of the church of Santa Maria degli Spagnoli in Monserrato in the 17th century, this took on the role of the Spanish national church.

In the late 19th century under Pope Leo XIII. the building, which has already threatened to fall apart completely renovated. As part of the renovation of the main entrance was moved to the front of the Piazza Navona. The apse and transept were demolished in 1938 to make way for today's Corso del Rinascimento Avenue.

Facility

Most works of art and monuments grave were transferred to the church of Santa Maria degli Spagnoli de Monserrato. Are preserved to this day some of the Renaissance, including a pulpit in polychrome marble and the marble wall behind the high altar. The chapel of San Giacomo is obtained.
