Notre-Dame Cathedral, Luxembourg

Our Lady of Luxembourg Cathedral (French Cathédrale Notre -Dame de Luxembourg, Luxembourgish Cathedral Notre -Dame) is a Roman Catholic church in the city of Luxembourg and the cathedral church of the Archdiocese. The Luxembourg designate the church as St. Mary's Cathedral.

History

First, a Jesuit church was built on the present site, whose foundation stone was laid in 1613. In the 18th century built the core building of the present church building.

End of the 18th century, the church took the miraculous image of the comforter of the afflicted, the city and state patron, and was the center of the Mother of God octave.

Some 50 years later, she received the consecration title of Our Lady Church. In 1870, Pope Pius IX. the church to the Cathedral of Our Lady.

2011 was the cathedral as a backdrop for the movie The Treasure Knight and the Secret of Melusina.

Architecture

Original building

The building is a remarkable example of the late Gothic period, but has different, influenced by the Renaissance style elements and embellishments. The main entrance is located on l' Arc Athenée / Roosevelt Boulevard (see picture), located in the Rue Notre Dame a barrier-free side entrance.

Reconstruction in the 20th century

Between 1935 and 1938, the cathedral was expanded and enlarged. The expansion of the cathedral, which influenced the silhouette of the fortress city of Luxembourg, was carried out according to the plans and under the supervision of the Luxembourg architect Hubert Schumacher.

The extension, which adjoins the two choir bays 1613-1621, impressed both by its spaciousness, as well as by the architectural unit, the current form of the old monastery church in the appearance of the city. Altar

In the polygonal choir, a wonderfully equipped with a gilded altar is the Mother of God figure. High and designed with colored glass arched windows allow daylight in broken colors occur. The Chorvorraum decorate tapestries with biblical scenes. The nave is supported by a ribbed vault.

Organs

The cathedral houses two organs: a tool of the main and the large organ on the west gallery of a French organ building.

The great cathedral organ goes back in part to an instrument from 1880, which was built by the organ builder Dalstein and Haerpfer from Boulay- Moselle. This organ was pneumatized in 1921 and 1929 extended from the main organ building company from Lintgen. In 1938 the instrument was replaced by a new building of the same organ builder with 84 registers ( cone chests ), four manuals and pedal. The instrument has electro-pneumatic tracker action. From this organ is also the Western Empor organ was alluding, in 1995 replaced by the new building of George West fields. The rear organ had 24 registers and is currently stored.

The West galleries organ was in 1995 by the organ builder Westenfelder ( Lintgen, Luxembourg ) built. The instrument has 60 registers, four manuals and pedal. A special feature is the Spanish trumpet work.

Bells

The bells of the cathedral consists of eleven bells. When you fire the cathedral in 1985 only the great bell, Christ the King Bourdon was called, spared from the flames. It is the work of bell foundry Ulrich in Apolda from the year 1937. 1986 poured the Karlsruhe bells and art foundry ten new bells. The big bell ( strike note a0) is related to the four smallest bells (d2, e2, f k2 and a2) in the east tower; the other bells ( h0, d1, e1, f k1, a1 and h1) are located in the west tower.

The crypt as a burial
