Nouvelle Théologie

The Nouvelle Théologie was a direction within the French Catholic theology since the 1930s. She wanted to be more involved in the theology in the context of contemporary philosophy and critical engagement with the neo-scholasticism historical thinking and the biblical- patristic tradition.

Representative

Important representatives of the Nouvelle Théologie were the religious theologians Henri Bouillard, Marie- Dominique Chenu, Yves Congar, Henri de Lubac and Jean Daniélou, in a way, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. Also Hans Urs von Balthasar was close to her.

Topics

The Nouvelle Théologie sat down, for example, with the question of the historicity of truth and the relationship between nature and grace apart and sought a dialogue with Marxism as well as with non-Christian religions. For a reassessment of Thomas Aquinas mainly de Lubac began.

Criticism and reception

First, the Nouvelle Théologie was heavily criticized by the Church's Magisterium, because in her outline of a new modernism were suspected, and there were disputes within the order ( Dominicans, Jesuits ), the respective representatives.

The Second Vatican Council took place in the 1960s, then with the participation of some of the main representatives as Council theologians partially suggestions from the Nouvelle Théologie on. Late recognition was given to individual representatives with the award of the dignity of Cardinal, while other reformers came into conflict with the Magisterium of the Church.
