Novosokolniki

Nowosokolniki (Russian Новосокольники ) is a town in Pskov Oblast (Russia) with 8119 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the southern part of the heights of Beschanizy about 290 kilometers southeast of the Oblasthauptstadt Pskov on the river Little Udrai ( Maly Udrai ) in the river system of Lovat.

Nowosokolniki is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

The city lies at the intersection of 1901 opened Railroads Moscow -Riga ( kilometer 506) and in 1904 opened route Saint Petersburg- Dno - Nevel - Vitebsk ( kilometer 421).

History

Nowosokolniki originated around 1900 in connection with the construction of a station on the railway between Moscow and Windawa.

Were named station and associated settlement after 10 km away then town Sokolniki, which belonged to the province of Vitebsk. Nowosokolniki means New Sokolniki; the street from Welikije Luki after Sokolniki passed through here. The name is derived from the Russian ( Slavic ) word sokol for Falcon ( see also coat of arms ).

In 1925 the town was awarded its town charter.

During World War II Nowosokolniki was occupied on 25 July 1941 by the German Wehrmacht and recaptured on 29 January 1944 by troops of the 2nd Baltic Front of the Red Army in the Leningrad - Novgorod operation.

Culture and sights

In the village Nowoje the Church of The Kiev Petschorsker is Mother of God ( церковь Киево - Печёрской Богоматери / Tserkov Kijewo - Petschorskoi Bogomateri ) from the 19th century. Nearby is the Wallburg Ostri from the 12th to the 13th century.

Infrastructure

Near Nowosokolniki guests since 1995 a 360 meter high radio mast to the spread of FM radio and television programs.

Economy

In Nowosokolniki there is next to farms of rail transport companies in the textile and food industries.
