Nuclear power in Japan

The list of nuclear reactors in Japan includes all commercial power reactors, even if their design / construction was finally abandoned, and all research reactors and nuclear facilities used for military purposes.

After the Fukushima nuclear disaster to early May 2012, all 17 Japanese nuclear power plants were shut down, which practically amounted to a nuclear phase-out. In total there were before the disaster to 54 reactors in operation.

So far, in Japan there are no plans yet for a final repository for radioactive waste. The spent fuel is subsequently reprocessed in France ( La Hague ) and the UK ( Sellafield ). The radioactive waste produced thereby is stored in Rokkasho. On the same site there is also the reprocessing plant at Rokkasho. 2010, more than a third of the electricity demand was met by nuclear energy. In 1999 there were an accident; then increased the resistance of the population. However, there was so far no environmental movement in Europe. In the wake of the Tohoku earthquake on March 11, 2011, several nuclear power plants had to be shut down and it came at the nuclear power plant Fukushima Daiichi to a number of catastrophic accidents and a meltdown in units 1, 2 and 3 This changed the image of nuclear energy in of public opinion. So therefore, 70 % of Japanese now speak out for a nuclear phase-out. Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda spoke of a restructuring of the energy sector ( energy change ) and the long-term phase-out of nuclear energy by the year 2040. Few days later, the appropriate strategy paper was rejected at a cabinet meeting. The government approved the transformation of energy, but let the time for the decommissioning of nuclear power plants open.

Nuclear power plants

In the group of nuclear power plants fall all power reactors and prototype systems that are used for commercial power generation. The Japanese nuclear power plants are all located on the seaside or near the coast; most have type reactors pressure ( PWR) and boiling water reactor ( BWR ).

Nuclear power plants operating without recording

Under the grouping nuclear power plants without operating recording includes all power reactors and prototype systems that should be used for commercial power generation, but have not yet been completed, and their planning and construction have been permanently discontinued, and all power reactors that are planned not yet under construction, but firmly.

* Since the Japanese government has announced a switch to renewable energy, shareholders have called for the shutdown of existing plants Tepco and the company has financial problems, a commissioning of the nuclear power plant Higashidori is questionable. The construction of the blocks 7 and 8 of the NPP Fukushima - Daiichi was abandoned in May 2011.

Research reactors

Under the grouping research reactor fall nuclear reactors that do not serve the power generation, but mainly for research purposes ( nuclear and material- technical studies, isotope production for medicine and technology ) can be used.
