Nukuoro

Nukuoro is an atoll in the Federated States of Micronesia. It is part of the State of Pohnpei.

Geography

Nukuoro has a population of less than 400 people.

The lagoon has a diameter of 6 km. The total area of ​​the atoll is 40 km ², the land area but only 1.67 km ². Of this, 0.466 km ², or 46.6 acres on the main island Nukuoro accounts, which is six times as large as the second largest island Gausema. The resources of the islands are therefore limited. The residents live on fishing, a little agriculture and the rearing of livestock.

The atoll is relatively secluded. There is no runway and little boat traffic: Once a month, the island is served by a passenger ship. The atoll is controlled from time to time by cruise ships.

Language

They speak a language of the Polynesian language group called " Nukuoro ". Therefore, the island is one of the Polynesian enclaves, which are located outside of the Polynesian triangle.
