Pashko Vasa wrote the poem during the formation of the League of Prizren, which strove for a unification of all Albanian inhabited areas in the kingdom in a government unit. The League adapted the verse The faith of Albanians is the Albanianness! ( E Feja Shqytarit Asht Shqyptaria! ) As its motto. O moj Shqypni reflects the widespread view among Albanian intellectuals, according to which the national consciousness could only be strengthened by overcoming the religious cleavage. This was achieved by replacing the importance of religion with that of the Albanian culture and patriotism. The poem criticizes the political and cultural strife, the Vasa saw on the way to a unified Albanian nation as an obstacle.
