The community has some special features. So it is - although belonging to the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden - completely surrounded by the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden and St. Gallen. Thus, the community forms an exclave. In addition, the community divides itself into two districts, which are not interconnected, but by a part of the community Reute that belongs to Ausserrhoden, are separated. Also for the district area is one of the monastery of St. Ottilia Grimm stone, which is located in Walzenhausen place. The Catholic monastery was the district Oberegg slammed as part of the Canton of division, although it is within Ausserrhoden Walzenhausen. The district maintains Oberegg not least because of its status as a private enclave of the District Court. Therefore, it is referred to in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden as an outer part of the country, while the other districts form the inner part of the country.

The upper part of the municipality ( also called " top gear ") consists of the village, St. Anton and Kapf. The lower part (even " lower gear " called ) comprises the hamlets Büriswilen, Esch moss and Sulzbach.

History

A find of Roman coins near the hamlet Heilsbronnen suggests a early celebration of the district area. However, the actual settlement by the Alemanni was loud documentary mention only in the transition from the 12th place to the 13th century. The large number of clearing names and farm names for wild animals ( Bern floor, Bensol, Falch stone or Uelenhorst ) represent a second epoch of colonization. Only the hamlet Büriswilen bears a name from the Carolingian period. The name first appears in a Oberegg Wegbrief of 1470 as the hamlet name.

The settlers came from the Rhine valley (of Bernang, Marbach and Altstaetten ) or from the Appenzell Plateau. They were subjects of the Abbot of St. Gallen, the charges also were to except payment. Stood by the secular lords of Rosenberg Berneck and Meier of Altstaetten. The latter built on the current district area of the castle Oberegg high - Altstaetten.

A connection to the Appenzellische freedom movement seems to be gradually vonstattengegangen. A deed dated August 10, 1404 proves that the Appenzeller agreed with the top Eggern on the admission to the land law. Around the middle of the 15th century, then the waters of the eastern Appenzeller country joined under the name " Nachpurschaft on Hersberg " together.

With the land division of the Reformation in 1597, when the country was split into a Catholic Appenzell Inner - and a Protestant Ausserrhoden, Oberegg became the enclave. With the old faith to change the Oberegger Innerrhoden were slammed, although they were surrounded by Protestant communities. The district border is still often zigzag, because had to be decided depending on the religious affiliation of farmers to which Rhode her court should belong.

In the period of the Helvetic Republic Oberegg and Hirschberg were the district forest of the canton Santis slammed, while the hamlet came Kapf and at the bottom Canton Upper Rhine Valley. The Oberegger were mostly against the reorganization. This went so far that against the oath to the new Constitution, the weapons have been collected under the leadership of Johann Kolb. On September 4, 1798 but these were overwhelmed by Helvetic troops from the district of Herisau in Upper Holzern.

In the period of mediation, the dispute over the demarcation of the two half-cantons lived Inner and Outer Rhodes again. Despite a Diet introduced by the arbitral tribunal, the final borders could be drawn only after the creation of the new state in 1848.

The district Oberegg in its present form was created because of a new State Constitution in 1872 from the merger of six Rhoden Hirschberg and Oberegg.
