Ocna Șugatag

Ocna Şugatag ( Altwerk German, Hungarian Aknasugatag ) is a town in Maramureş County in the north- western Romania. Special recognition has become the place as a thermal station for its salt baths.

Location

The municipality is situated on the high plateau of Maramureş at an altitude of about 500 meters, at the foot of Tibles Mountains. The town extends along the county road (drum judeean ) DJ 109F between Baia Mare and Sighetu Marmaţiei. After Sighetu Marmaţiei and the Ukrainian border is 20 kilometers away.

History

The village was first mentioned in 1355 in a document for land distribution of Maramureş. From 1787-1822 was dug in mines in front of the village after saline, which was then largely resold. Today the mines are shut down and the underground salt is used in the numerous salt baths. Writings to the famous mineral springs in the region date back to the 19th century. They were as Bredenbad or bath Brieb known.

Population

In a 1930 census the village Ocna Şugatag were determined even 1568 inhabitants. 890 of them were Magyars, 480 Romanians, 169 were Jewish, 18 German and one known as Ukrainians. In the census of 2002 4.207 inhabitants were counted in the field of community. 3,710 of these were Romanians, 403 of which were Hungary, 76 Roma, 14 Ukrainians, three were German and one of them was a Jew. 2011 were registered in the municipality Ocna Şugatag 3,853 people.

Economy

Among the most important branches of acquisition Ocna Şugatag include, as in the rest of the region, agriculture, forestry and animal husbandry. In addition, many residents are employed in the tourism industry, especially in the numerous salt baths.

With the help of foreign investors want to build in the future, new schools and kindergartens. In addition, water supply and road network to be expanded.

Tourism and Attractions

Ocna Şugatag lives from beach tourism. However, these are not just spa and salt water baths in hotels. Even in the wild and in swimming pools, lots of salt baths are set up in the summer, which are used by visitors from all over the surrounding area.

Furthermore, the borough is also known for her 44 -acre forest reserve Crăiasca where can find a variety of old oaks and evergreen oaks. The nature reserve Rezervaţia Creasta Cocoşului in Tibles Mountains also has a variety of different wild plant and animal species.

In Ocna Şugatag addition, there is also a UNESCO World Heritage-listed wooden church, which - like the other specimens this region - characterized by its simple wooden facade and carved painstakingly by hand wooden crosses.
