Odderøya Lighthouse

Odderøya fyr is a Grade II Listed lighthouse on the Norwegian peninsula Odderøya at the west entrance to the port of Kristiansand in Vest-Agder Fylke. It was built in 1832. The lighthouse was built simultaneously with the Oksøy fyr and has a functional and visual connection to this and the Grønningen fyr.

The plant

The system includes the nacelle, with an apartment for the lighthouse keeper, the wash-house, the oil tank and a boathouse with dock. The present building is mainly from 1874, since the lighthouse was added and the first station was demolished. The original lighthouse has been preserved and integrated into the gable end of the new wooden building. Outside in front of the main building hangs a fog bell.

History

The original lighthouse was small and located deep at the deepest point of the terrain. Initially, the technique was simple. So the search began with a kerosene lamp ( round burner ) and a southward, parabolic reflector. This was screened and only came in calm sea between Grønningen and Oksøy used to provide a safe onward journey inland. In addition, two kerosene lamps ( flat burner ) were installed with reflectors, one in the direction Dybingen and a. Towards the port All three lamps burning rapeseed oil. The head lamp should burn the whole year from sunset to sunrise.

In 1874, the lighthouse was moved to its current, higher -lying terrain. It was equipped with a higher standard, which, however, did not work satisfactorily. Therefore, the lighthouse got a new lighting system, which should be deposited by means of a flashing light from the city lights of Kristiansand in the background. Years later, a 700 kg heavy fog bell on the gable wall ( lake side) was hung.

1914 got the Odderøya a lighthouse lens attachment 4th grade.

Between 1927 and 1928, both beacon and fog bell were electrified and connected to an emergency generator.

1984, a new, modern beacon in front of the station was installed automatically deducted and the crew.

Importance

Odderøya fyr is one of Norway typical, small, wooden lighthouse station with a tower at the gable end of a house. It is characteristic of the port of Kristiansand and has in connection with Oksøy Grønningen and a historical value. The installation of the exposed fog bell is the only remaining structure of its kind in Norway. In 1994, the entire system of the lighthouse was declared a National Monument, the site is but partially released as a recreation area. The Vest- Agder fylkeskommune ( district government ) bought the plant in 2005 for 500 000 NOK from Kystverket ( authority responsible for the infrastructure of waterways Norway ).
