Development

In 1994, coming from the film industry designer Sherry McKenna and Lorne Lanning, the studio Oddworld Inhabitants. Published in 1997, the studio 's first title, Oddworld: Abe 's Oddysee for the PlayStation console, and Windows. In the center of the action was the anti-hero Abe from the people of Mudokons, which is unexpected for the symbolic figure of a revolt against the oppression of its own kind. Target McKenna and Lanning was going to develop similar to the movie with poignant plot and emotional character development games. The game should also be the beginning of an Oddworld game series known as Quintology that puts each item at another hero in the foreground. The title won high critical acclaim and numerous awards, the game was titled Oddworld 1998: Adventures also ported and adapted to the handheld Game Boy console. Also in 1998, therefore, followed the successor titled Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus, the developer Oddworld Inhabitants but not at the scheduled Quintology ( German: pentalogy ) was counted, but referred to as "bonus tracks ". Also, this title was in an adapted version of handheld console, the Game Boy Color, ported and released in 2000.

The second title of the Quintology appeared in 2001 under the title Oddworld: Munch 's Oddysee as an exclusive launch title for Microsoft's Xbox console. With Munch, another protagonist was introduced. This title was in 2003 on Game Boy Advance (as Oddworld: Adventures 2 ) and ported to Windows 2010 PC. Munch 's Oddysee is the so far last title of the originally planned Quintology dar. followed in 2005 with Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, also for Xbox, one more branch and so far last new development. The title turned out to developers Oddworld Inhabitants financial flop and added a disagreement with the publishing partner Electronic Arts, who hired among others, the port of the game on the PlayStation 2. Instead of the time required for the break-even point of 1.6 million copies so just 600,000 copies were sold. These experiences prompted the management to Lanning, turning his back on the game industry. The announced in collaboration with Majesco Entertainment still in April 2005 next Oddworld titles, Oddworld: The Brutal Ballad of Fangus Klot, has been discontinued, abandoned the development of other games.

In July 2010, Oddworld Inhabitants announced a partnership with the British development studio Just Add Water. Just Add Waters was charged with the development of high resolution HD versions of previously published Oddworld games for the then-current gaming platforms. After the clashes with Electronic Arts, the games should be sold without publishing partner in self-distribution of Oddworld Inhabitants using digital distribution. The aim was to generate sufficient funds for the further development of the series. The first new release was followed in December 2011 with Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD, Munch 's Oddysee HD 2012 followed. The first games were unchanged for now, republished and offered a collection called Oddboxx with all games. Abe 's Oddysee and Abe's Exoddus sold digitally then in March 2014 together again over a million copies. From Munch 's Oddysee HD, Stranger's Wrath HD and the Oddboxx also about a million copies were sold, with Stranger's Wrath HD, the numbers of first publication even topped with some 600,000 copies. Total sales of the entire series thus rose to around seven million games sold.

Already in January 2011 Lanning announced for Oddworld: Abe 's Oddysee that they wanted to publish the game in a completely revised version with a new 3D graphics and physics engine.
