Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters ( In German: from you I want to sing: A letter to my daughters ) is a 40-page children's book by President Barack Obama (text) and Loren Long (Illustrator), the 2010 in an initial print run of 500,000 copies by Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. has been released. The German version was released in 2011 by Carl Hanser Verlag ( Munich).

Content

Obama has a children's book dedicated to his two daughters, who are depicted with a dog on the front page. The title makes use of a line of patriotic song " My Country, 'Tis of Thee ". Basis of 13 figures from U.S. history explains virtues such as courage, creativity, and charity, while it deals with Albert Einstein, Martin Luther King, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Jackie Robinson, sitting Bull, Georgia O'Keeffe, Helen Keller, Billie Holiday, Neil Armstrong, Maya Ying Lin, Cesar Chavez, and Jane Addams.

Reception

In the U.S., the children's book of the U.S. president did not enjoy positive feedback. The Wall Street Journal put it as " controversial " dar. The conservative TV channel Fox News criticized the positive mention of the famous Indian chief Sitting Bull Obama Bull had recognized " as a medicine man who healed broken hearts and Promise and welcomes it did, that not all people are the same, "said the Hanoverian General. The Internet platform of Fox News readers had then under the heading "Obama praises Indian chief, U.S. General killed ," invited for criticism.

In German speaking Europe Spiegel Online praised the children's book as " a love letter to the ideals of the United States " and noted that Obama's opponents have " as if on command with hysteria " responding. " Stuttgarter Zeitung, however, summed up that the book was " without the pretty pictures even for fans of the President ... content a little thin. " The Frankfurter Rundschau criticized: " Papa Obama, it seems, has great difficulty to let the politicians after work in the Oval Office and his daughters to tell something they find really exciting." As " certainly honorable " described the Basler Zeitung Obama concern, " but then the result looks a bit serious and pedantic ".

Details

The proceeds from the Children's Book is a foundation that cares for children of fallen or injured U.S. soldiers benefit. It was Obama's third book by its political bestseller The Audacity of Hope and Dreams From My Father 's memoirs. He wrote it before his election as U.S. president, because he had already in 2004, committed after his election as Senator from Illinois, contracted to write three books.
