Itylo (Greek Οίτυλο (n. sg. ), Sometimes also transcribed Oitylo ) is the name of a village in the Peloponnese and an eponymous municipality of East Mani Greek community ( Anatoliki Mani ). The place is located in the south of the Peloponnese, around 80 kilometers south of Kalamata, the biggest town of the municipality is Areopoli.

Location

The area occupies the southwestern part of the Mani peninsula between the Messinian Gulf ( Messiniakos kolpos ) and the Taygetos mountain range, and thus the essential part of Messa Mani.

Administrative divisions

The municipality Itylo was 1997-2010 as an independent municipality with its administrative seat Areopoli. This in turn had been formed in 1997 from several independent communities that are performed since 2010 as localities ( gr topikes kinotites τοπικές κοινότητες ).

  • Areopoli, 1016 inhabitants, the old commercial center of the Messa Mani, home of the Mavromichalis family, the flag of Mani ( with a blue cross and the slogan ΝΙΚΗ Ή ΘΑΝΑΤΟΣ, victory or death ' hoisted here with other Maniots on March 17, 1821 and thus a start signal to the Greek War of Independence gave.

Character

The landscape of the township is rough, wild beauty, the coast is rocky and impassable. Characteristic are the cacti and the many - now largely vacant, partially disintegrating, but also partly restored towers in the numerous small settlements.
