Geography

Old Harbour Bay is located on the south coast of Jamaica in the Bay Old Harbour Bay. The town rises to 5 meters above the sea level. On the eastern edge of the city, the bay opens Harbour.Ebenfalls located east of the bay Galleon, is a large reserve of mangrove forests, which also includes, in the bay southeast lying, uninhabited island of Little Goat Iceland belongs.

In the north the settlement Moores Pen is elapse its boundaries with those of Old Harbour Bay. About 6 kilometers west of the town the marina Port Esquivel along with the city and also, 6 km away, but lying north of Old Harbour is a commercial hub is located on the island form. The city is located about 13 kilometers north- west of Spanish Town, Saint Catherine Parish of capital.

History

Old Harbour Bay was founded in 1510-1513 by the Spanish conquistador Juan de Esquivel as a fortified port facility under the name of Puerto de Caballo Bayo Esquivella. Later, the attachment has developed into a fishing village. When the island was conquered by the English colonialists in the 16th century was Old Harbour Bay its present name.

Between the years 1845 and 1859 a large number of people emigrated from India to Jamaica. The ships put all in Old Harbour Bay. Today, a large ethnic Indian community lives of Jamaicans in Old Harbour Bay, for the most part the Hindu faith.

Industry and economy

Old Harbour Bay has a major international seaport and several shipyards. The city also has an international airport, the Port Esquivel Airfield.

The place, together with the marina Port Esquivel and the trading post Old Harbour is one of the most important trade centers in the sugar and bauxite on the island. In Old Harbour is an important freight station which is coupled to the ports located in Old Harbour Bay and Port Esquivel

The majority of the population of Old Harbour Bay is active in the fisheries sector.
