Oleg Velyky (originally Ukrainian Олег Великий / Oleh Welykyj; born October 14, 1977 in Brovary, Soviet Union, † January 23, 2010 in Kiev ) was a German handball player who played for HSV Hamburg.

Velyky was a member of the German national handball team. His international debut for the Federal Republic of Germany he gave on January 8, 2005 in Winterthur in the game against Switzerland national handball team. Previously, he played 59 international matches for the Ukrainian national handball team. Since 1 April 2004 Velyky held German citizenship.

Velyky was a player who could be used in many positions. He usually played on back center of the room or back room on the left. He was considered one of the best individuals in the world handball. Velyky had a body length of 1.89 m and weighed 96 kg.

Oleg Velyky was a professional sports teacher. In September 2003, a malignant melanoma was diagnosed with Velyky. The melanoma was surgically removed in January 2004, began an 18-month therapy, which led to a remission.

Late 2006, he signed a three year contract with the Premier League rivals the Rhein- Neckar Löwen, HSV Hamburg, which was initially apply from the 2008/2009 season. However, both clubs agreed in January 2008 to a premature change.

At the 2008 European Championships in Norway, Velyky injured in the first game against Belarus after four minutes of the game and two goals scored at the knee. In the subsequent investigation, a cruciate ligament tear was diagnosed which ruled out further participation in the European Championships. Already at the 2006 European Championships, he was unable to attend because of a torn ACL.

On 3 March 2008 Velyky confirmed a recurrence of his skin cancer. Nevertheless, he was still active as a player.

On the night of January 23, 2010 in Kiev Velyky succumbed to cancer. Velyky was married and had a son.
