Olga Preobrajenska

Olga Iossifowna Preobraschenskaja (Russian Ольга Иосифовна Преображенская, mostly Olga Preobrajenska transcribed; . * 21 Januarjul / February 2 1871greg in Saint Petersburg, . † December 27, 1962 in Saint- Mandé ) was a Russian dancer and dance teacher and one of the most popular dancers of the Imperial ballet in St. Petersburg.

Life

Her dance training began Preobraschenskaja with eight years at the Imperial Ballet School in St. Petersburg. Her teachers included Nicholas Legat, Enrico Cecchetti, Christian Johansson and Marius Petipa. At eighteen, she was engaged at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. At 25, she became a principal dancer with 29 years in 1900, Prima Ballerina. From 1895 she gave guest performances in Paris, London and America.

After the Russian Revolution, she gave dance lessons in St. Petersburg and from 1923 in Paris. In the following decades, there were no well-known dancer, who had taken no classes with her. Among her pupils were also Margot Fonteyn, Tamara and Irina Baronova Toumanova.

Preobraschenskaja died at age 91 and is buried in the cemetery of Montmartre in Paris.
