Oliver Belmont

Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont ( born November 12, 1858 in New York City; † June 10, 1908 in Hempstead, Nassau County, New York ) was an American politician and millionaire. He was the son of originating from Alzey banker and politician August Belmont and brother of Perry Belmont and August Belmont junior. It received its name from its large maternal uncle, Oliver Hazard Perry.

In 1890, he inherited a part of his father's multimillion dollar fortune. In order Belmonts Richard Morris Hunt built from 1891 to 1894, the property Belcourt Castle in Newport, which is modeled castles of various European countries and architectural eras. From 1901 to 1903 Belmont represented the 13th Congressional District of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives. In addition, he ran unsuccessfully for mayor of New York.

On January 11, 1896 married Alva Vanderbilt Belmont, the ex-wife of William Kissam Vanderbilt.

After his death, Belmont was interred in the Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx. Its designed by Richard Morris Hunt mausoleum is an exact copy of the Hubertus chapel in Amboise Castle.
