Oliver C. Comstock

Oliver Cromwell Comstock ( born March 1, 1780 in Warwick, Rhode Iceland, † January 11, 1860 in Marshall, Michigan) was an American physician, lawyer, politician and cleric. Between 1813 and 1819 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Oliver Cromwell Comstock was born during the American Revolutionary War in Kent County. During his childhood, his family moved to Schenectady. There he received a generous education. He studied medicine and then practiced in Trumansburg. Between 1810 and 1812 he sat in the New York State Assembly. It was in 1812 at the First Judge Court of Common Pleas of Seneca County - a post he held until 1815.

As opponents of a strong central government, he joined at that time, which was founded by Thomas Jefferson Democratic- Republican Party. In the congressional elections of 1812, for the 13th Congress, he was in the 20th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he was the first representative of the district in the U.S. House of Representatives began its service on March 4, 1813. He was re-elected twice in a row. Since he gave up a re-election bid in 1818, he retired after March 3, 1819 from the Congress.

In the years 1817 and 1818, he was First Judge at the Court of Common Pleas of Tompkins County. He gave his occupation as a doctor and studied theology. After receiving his dedication to the Baptist clergyman, he began to preach. He was from 1825 to 1834 pastor of the First Baptist Church in Rochester. On December 20, 1836, he was appointed chaplain in the U.S. House of Representatives - a position which he held until March 3, 1837. He moved in 1839 to Michigan, where he continued his work as a priest in Detroit. Between 1841 and 1843 he worked as a regent at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Then he held 1843-1845 the post of State Superintendent of Public Instruction. On January 11, 1860, he died in Marshall in Calhoun County and was then buried in the Oakridge Cemetery.
