Omaruru is a municipality in the same constituency Omaruru in the Erongo region in Namibia. The municipality has 6,000 inhabitants and is located on the Omaruru Rivier and Otjimakuru which both begin near the mountain Otjo ( 2082 m). It is regarded as artists and retirees city of Namibia.

The city's name is derived from Omaere, a traditional Namibian dairy product.

History

Omaruru is due to the Rhenish Mission, who built several buildings in 1872 here. The missionary Gottlieb Viehe wrote here the first Bible translation into Herero Herero and converted many of the region to Christianity. 1894 a military station of the German colonial forces for the colony of German South West Africa was established in Omaruru, the Lieutenant Richard D. Volkmann led until 1898 as district chief.

Beginning of 1904 was the scene of a settlement Herero uprising against German soldiers stationed here, but this was put down after only one week. The eingeschanzten soldiers were helped by a company, which was led by Captain Victor Franke. This broke through the siege of the Herero and freed the barracks. Apology from the von Trotha family
