The Omomyidae family is a very diverse primate family that had its heyday in the Eocene and became extinct in the early Oligocene again. Fossils are known from Europe, Asia and North America.

The Omomyiden were related to the tarsiers and ( Tarsiiformes ) are usually placed in the same partial order. They are considered the earliest representatives of the dry nose primates, but are not ancestors of the New and Old World monkeys, but put together with the tarsiers a specialized side branch dar.

Most Omomyiden were smaller than the same living Adapiformes. They reached an average weight of 50-500 g, only a few species reached a weight of 1.0-2.5 kg. Omomyiden be divided generally into three subfamilies. That these are the one who found primarily in North America and Anaptomorphinae Omomyinae and on the other, known only from Europe Microchoerinae.

The best-known genus of the family is Necrolemur, whose remains were found in France and Germany. The genus Necrolemur is characterized by large eyes, strong hind legs and a long tail, features that are also found in extant tarsiers, which are excellent jumpers.

Teeth

Based on the morphology of the dentition, it is assumed that the Omomyiden have fed just like extant tarsiers of insects. With the exception of the front teeth, the teeth of the Omomyiden resembles today living tarsiers. The canines are usually reduced and the front incisors often increased while at tarsiers, the situation is reversed. The most primitive part of the Holarctic genus Omomyiden Teilhardina and to the North American genus Steinius. They had the same lower dental formula ( 2.1.4.3 ) as the early Adapiformes and the teeth show only subtle differences to the primitive genus adapoiden Donrussellia, suggesting a close common ancestry.
