Ondol

Ondol is the Korean word for " floor heating".

The word ondol ( sinokoreanisch on = hot, korean dol = stone) points out how these traditional heating system worked: The mixture was heated with fire to occupied floor with stones. The living rooms have under the floor of an empty room, which serves as the heating tube and is heated by the smoke of the fire. Following the same principle worked Roman hypocaust.

On cold days, the inhabitants of the houses with ondol were preferred on the ground. This is variously interpreted as a starting point of Korean Culture seat - preferably one sat on the warm floor, ate and slept there. The same room was used as working, dining, living room and bedroom.

Today include (modern ) Underfloor heating in Korea of the basic equipment of each apartment and are thus much more common than in Central Europe. Most of the heated part of the soil is therefore somewhat higher than in the non-heated; this can be clearly recognized on Tobang.
