Ontika

Ontika ( German also Ontika ) is a village (Estonian küla ) in the Estonian Ida- Viru. It belongs to the rural community Kohtla and is located directly on the Baltic Sea. Ontika has 98 inhabitants (as at: January 7, 2013).

History

Ontika was first mentioned in 1241 in Liber Census Daniæ documented. 1430 Ontika was listed as the property of the Order Vogts of Narva. In the aftermath of the Livonian War (1558-1583) Ontika was completely destroyed and abandoned. 1677 for the first time the estate Ontika was mentioned. From 1780 he was a member of the Baltic noble family de Clapier Colongue.

The late classical two-storey main building was built in 1855. It is just 50 meters from the coast of the Gulf of Finland removed. 1919, the owners were expropriated in the course of the Estonian land reform. This historic manor house fell into disrepair in later years, but remained tourist attraction of Ontika.

2011, the property was acquired by the Finnish skier Kalle Palander and rebuilt in the following years to a hotel.

Popular destination and object of research by geologists is the cliff of Ontika. The Klint is the highest North Estonia with 55.6 m. The area is a nature reserve Ontika ( Ontika maastikukaitseala ) since 1935 under special protection.

Reception

In 2009 they had a novel titled " Ontika: The Legacy of the Dragon " ( Boje- Verlag) by Manfred Theisen, who has both the Estonian cultural history, and the place itself Ontika processed in a fantasy novel. Ontika is in that place where the elves live. In a reading Manfred Theisen claimed to have been inspired by the real place Ontika.
