Saka ( German Sackhof ) is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Kohtla ( Kohtla vald ). It is located in Ida -Viru county (East Wierland ) in northeastern Estonia.

Description and History

The village has 133 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2010). It is located ten kilometers north of the city Kohtla -Järve at the Estonian Baltic Sea coast.

On Klint, the 47.5 -meter-high waterfall is Saka ( Saka joastik ), which consists of three large and several smaller cascades. The water supply was established in the middle of the 19th century over a two -meter-deep trench artificially.

Saka was first mentioned in documents in 1241 in Liber Census Daniae. A first well was probably around this time. In the Middle Ages it was expanded into a vassal castle or a fortified residence. However, no structural traces are no longer present.

Good Saka

The manor of Saka has been demonstrated elsewhere since the 17th century. 1629 gave the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf the estate a native of Scotland Jörgen Letzle ( John Leslie ). Later it passed into the ownership of Otto Magnus von Stackelberg. From the second half of the 19th century to the expropriation in the course of the Estonian land reform in 1919 it was owned by the noble family of Löwis Monar.

The two-story mansion in neo-Renaissance style was built as the center of the estate in 1864. Characteristic of the building was the central tower with its high, narrow windows.

With the occupation of Estonia by the Red Army moved into the mansion first one a pioneer camp and then the Soviet border troops. They explained Situated on the cliff site a closed military zone.

The buildings and the extensive park of the estate have been preserved until today. They were after regaining of Estonian independence partly extensively restored in 2000 and sold by the Estonian government to a private owner. Today is located in an outbuilding of the estate a spa hotel. The mansion will be built a visitor center for the cliffs north of Estonia.
