Ootmarsum

Ootmarsum is a place in the Twente region. He belongs to the municipality spelled country in the Dutch province of Overijssel.

Historical Development

For the year 917 the death of the bishop of Utrecht in Radbod Ootmarsum is detected. At the time already was a small church or chapel in the village.

As a hub for the trade of West -Nederland to northern Germany, the place gained in importance and received city rights in 1314, which included the right to hold a carnival and the construction of defenses. In 1600 the defenses were demolished along with two city gates.

Oomarsum gained importance as an administrative center. It housed the episcopal Lehnhof as well as the headquarters of the Teutonic Order.

From the industrial revolution, the place could hardly benefit due to lack of transport connections - neither channel nor railways led by Ootmarsum. Therefore, the city has received its medieval appearance until today. Today Ootmarsum is known with its many galleries as art city of the Dutch East. Leading here is the Dutch painter Ton Schulten, who established in 2013 at great expense a centrally located place in the Art Museum.
