The Open University of Israel (Hebrew האוניברסיטה הפתוחה, ha'universitah ha'ptucha; Arab الجامعه المفتوحه ), with almost 40,000 students in Israel and several hundred students in over 60 countries around the world, the largest of Israel's eight universities. You only offers distance learning courses.

History

Based on an initiative of the then Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education, Yigal Allon, was first discussed in 1969 the establishment of a university that is open to every citizen of Israel and implement modern methods and approaches in knowledge transfer. On April 14, 1972 this idea a reality and the Open University of Israel under the name of " Everyman 's University " was officially founded in Ramat Aviv. It was later renamed to " The Open University of Israel." The financial support came from the Yad Hanadiv Foundation, a foundation of the Rothschild family. Max Rowe, Chairman of the Rothschild Foundation, was the first president.

There should be created a university whose doors are open to everyone and much of the population allows for an academic degree. The stated objectives addition to the provision of education and knowledge through teaching and research include the establishment of research institutes. 1995 the company moved into the newly built " Dorothy de Rothschild Campus" in Ra'anana. The modern building was designed by architect Ada Karmi - Israeli Melamede.

Students at the Open University of Israel

Distance learning also allows people an academic education that would otherwise be excluded from temporal, geographical, religious or financial reasons or because of the registration requirements thereof. Among the student body are working professionals, gifted high school students, soldiers ( both conscripts and professional soldiers ), Orthodox Jews and people from remote areas.

Distance learning and teaching methods

The distance learning program is based on textbooks, (individual) lessons through various media (Internet, television, radio, telephone), Teaching in the laboratory ( Natural Sciences), field trips and symposia, tests and final exams. More than 40 bachelor's degree programs in all subject areas and five master's degree programs are offered. All statements of the Open University of Israel are certified by the " Council for Higher Education " in Israel.
