OpenMediaVault

Open Media Vault ( OMV) is a system developed since 2009 free operating system for network - attached storage (NAS ). It is based on the Debian Linux distribution. The developer Volker Theile had previously been involved already at the FreeNAS project.

Technology

Open Media Vault comes largely from without adjustments to the program packages provided by Debian. Via a Web interface to adjust settings, and manage the system. File-based services such as CIFS (Samba) and NFS are the core function is that through the plug- in Open Media Vault also controls the handling of block-based data access as it is usual in SAN and provides this a iSCSI implementation. For a complete list of supported services and protocols can be found in the function overview.

About a programming interface ( API), it is possible to integrate further functions as a plug- in to the web interface. The developer provides several plug-ins available that can be directly installed via the web interface. More plug-ins are provided by independent developers.

Functions

  • Protocols: CIFS ( samba ), FTP, NFS (version 3 and 4), SSH, rsync, iSCSI, AFP, and TFTP
  • Software RAID with RAID levels 0, 1, 4, 5, 6, 10 and JBOD
  • Monitoring: Syslog, watchdog, SMART, SNMP ( v1/2c/3 ) ( read-only)
  • Status reports via e -mail
  • Status graphs for the CPU usage, LAN transfer rates, disk usage and memory use
  • GPT / EFI partitioning > 2TB possible ext4 maximum 16TiB
  • File systems: ext2, ext3, ext4 ( ext4 maximum 16TiB due to the 6 used by Debian e2fsprogs version 1.41 ), XFS, JFS, NTFS, FAT32
  • Quota
  • User and Group Management
  • Access controls via ACL
  • Link Aggregation, Wake On LAN
  • Plug -in system

Plug -ins

  • ClamAV - Antivirus program
  • Digital Audio Access Protocol - provides audio files on a local network ( for iTunes) ready
  • SAN and iSCSI - block-based access to data storage over the network
  • Lightweight Directory Access Protocol - information retrieval and modification of a directory service
  • Logical Volume Manager - enables the creation and management of dynamic variable partitions
  • Netatalk - File, time and print server for Apple Macintosh
  • Plug- in to support an uninterruptible power supply
  • Simple changes in the routing tables
  • Plug-in that allows the (automatic ) backups to external USB hard drives

More plug-ins are provided and maintained by third-party developers.

System

  • The operating system installation occupies the entire disk to claim on which the installation is performed. In this the user can not store their own data. Therefore, at least two disks are required for the productive use of Open Media Vault. An installation on a USB stick is possible but not recommended.

Hardware support

  • Hardware RAID controller: support all of Debian
  • Hard disk interface: PATA (IDE ) / SATA, SCSI, USB
  • Network cards: All supported Debian wireless and Ethernet network cards
  • CPU Architecture: IA -32 ( 32-bit ), AMD64 (64-bit ), ARM architecture
