OpenMediaVault
Open Media Vault ( OMV) is a system developed since 2009 free operating system for network - attached storage (NAS ). It is based on the Debian Linux distribution. The developer Volker Theile had previously been involved already at the FreeNAS project.
Technology
Open Media Vault comes largely from without adjustments to the program packages provided by Debian. Via a Web interface to adjust settings, and manage the system. File-based services such as CIFS (Samba) and NFS are the core function is that through the plug- in Open Media Vault also controls the handling of block-based data access as it is usual in SAN and provides this a iSCSI implementation. About a programming interface ( API), it is possible to integrate further functions as a plug- in to the web interface. The developer provides several plug-ins available that can be directly installed via the web interface. More plug-ins are provided by independent developers.

More plug-ins are provided and maintained by third-party developers.
System
- The operating system installation occupies the entire disk to claim on which the installation is performed. In this the user can not store their own data. Therefore, at least two disks are required for the productive use of Open Media Vault. An installation on a USB stick is possible but not recommended.
