The Oratory of San Francesco Saverio, better known as Oratorio del Caravita, is a church in Rome, the Spanish Jesuit Francis Xavier ( Italian: Francesco Saverio ) is dedicated.

Location

The church is located in the IX. Roman rione Pigna next to the Church of St. Ignatius, near the junction of the Via del Caravita in the Via del Corso.

Architectural History

Originally the church of San Nicola de Forbitoribus of Kamaldulenserordens, which was built in an arc of the Acqua Vergine at this point. For the extension of the Collegio Romano, the Jesuit exchanged this church against the Palazzo di Alessandro Vitelleschi. The Jesuit Father Pietro Garavita led from 1630 on the site of the old church to the new building of the Oratory, which was the popular and better-known names Oratorio del Caravita after him. Originally it was the Mater pietatis, the merciful mother, consecrated. Only in 1670 was followed by the rededication of the Holy Jesuit Francesco Saverio. To mark this event the churches has been fundamentally transformed by Giovanni Antonio de Rossi.

Architecture

The church consists of a nave interior with a semicircular apse. The two-storey façade adapts in its architecture to the adjacent Collegio Romano. The equipment with frescoes by Lazzaro Baldi was Sebastiano Conca and. In addition, the church contains frescoes by Baldassare Peruzzi, which were transferred from the demolished church of San Rocco a Ripetta.
