Orazio Alfani

Orazio Alfani, also Orazio di Domenico (* 1510 in Perugia, † in December 1583 in Rome ) was an Italian architect and painter of Mannerism in Umbria and Sicily.

Life

Orazio was the illegitimate son of Perugino 's pupil Domenico Alfani, of which he was also trained. As earliest independent work he created in 1530 in Perugia for the Cappella di San Giacomo of S. Fiorenzo frescoes that have been lost.

From 1539 to 1544 he was in Trapani and Palermo, where he received the rights of citizenship. In a contract dated 23 May 1539, he undertook to paint, together with the painter Francesco Martorana a wooden Custodia. There was commissioned to paint the marble arch by Antonello Gaginis in the Chiesa Annunciata to Trapani and to gild. From 1541 he was together with Martorana and the sculptors Fazio Gaginis and Scipione Casella busy with stucco decorations in the Tribuna of the Cathedral of Palermo. On July 9, 1541 he signed a contract with Benedetto Rau to paint historical pictures in his palace in Palermo.

In 1545 he was back in Perugia, where he was accepted into the painters' guild and henceforth frequently collaborated with his father. 1548 he painted for the church of the University of Perugia, a " resurrection of Christ." After his father's death he took over the workshop and received numerous commissions for paintings and frescoes. In 1573 he founded in Perugia together with the architect Raffaello Accademia del Disegno the social, a well-attended art school, which bears the name " Academy of Fine Arts Pietro Vannucci " today. To 1576 he was appointed city architect from Perugia. Orazio died in 1583 in Rome. His son Domenico di Orazio Alfani ( doc. 1574-1585 ) took over as heir father's workshop. Orazio Alfanis painting is influenced by the Mannerist painter Rosso Fiorentino and Raffaellino del Colle. His most important student in Sicily was the painter, sculptor and plasterer Antonio Ferraro.
