History

The Pauline goes back to a hermit movement in the 13th century. He is in Hungary by Blessed Eusebius (Hungarian Boldog Özséb ), a canon of Gran (Hungarian Esztergom ), was founded (1250 ). Eusebius collected living in Hungary and Croatia hermits and chose for her monastic life, the Rule of St. Augustine. For patron and model determined the monks St. Paul of Thebes, which is referred to in the tradition of the Church as " the first hermit " ( feast day: January 15). Already in 1270 the Order of Rome was officially recognized.

In Croatia, there was once in Kapela Mountains an important monastery of the Pauline Fathers, which was donated by the Prince of Francopan. A prominent role is played by the pilgrimage to Jasna Gora in Czestochowa, the largest Marian shrine Central and Eastern Europe to attend the Pauline for over six centuries. Every year, the image of the "Black Madonna" about three to four million pilgrims.

In Hungary and the Habsburg lands, the Order was abolished in 1786 by Joseph II. After a brief return in the 1930s, 1951, he was again banned in Hungary, where it can work again only in 1989 that officially.

Peculiarity

The origin and development gave the Order its own trains: the first Pauline studied as a recluse prayer, contemplation in solitude and strict way of life. In the historical development of the Order shows his lifelong quest to bring the contemplative life with the pastoral work in harmony.

Over the centuries, the Order remained flexible and open to the challenges of the time. He took over missionary tasks, developed his spirituality, his apostolic work and devoted himself to scientific and educational work.

The essence of the Pauline Fathers include:

  • Contemplation of God in solitude,
  • Attention to liturgical prayer,
  • A poor and industrious life,
  • Apostolic activity, especially the preaching of the Word of God and the donations of Penance.

Thanks to the numerous Marian shrines entrusted to him the Order soon received another special trait: In the general belief of the faithful, but also of the Pauline himself, he is regarded as a Marian Order. The spread of Marian devotion draws the Pavlán clearly.
