Ordubad District

Ordubad is a rayon (district) in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic in Azerbaijan. The capital of the district is the city Ordubad.

Geography

The district has an area of 972 km ² and is bordered on the north and east by Armenia, in the south of the Aras River to Iran. The region lies on the slopes of the Lesser Caucasus, there are deposits of non-ferrous metals, especially copper, and molybdenum.

The National Park Ordubad consists of 12 square kilometers and is home to, among others, the Caucasian bighorn sheep, leopards and brown bears.

Population

The rayon had 2009 45.000 inhabitants, these are spread over 43 villages and three larger settlements.

Economy

In agriculture, the region especially tropical fruit, wine, nuts and potatoes are grown and bred cattle. There are also several manufacturing and research-based enterprises in the district.

Culture

In the neighborhood there are a large number of monuments, including the ancient city Kharaba - Gilan.
